Description

What will the course cover?

This practical one–day workshop is ideal for anyone interested in learning how to stretch and frame canvas artwork. Whether you are an artist, a creative hobbyist, or simply curious about framing craftsmanship, this course provides a structured and enjoyable introduction to the techniques involved.

Through explanations, demonstrations, and hands-on practice, you will learn:

  • Artwork project planning, considering the characteristics and requirements of the artwork;
  • Familiarity with terminology related to canvas stretching styles;
  • How to cut mitred lengths of moulding for stretcher bars and frames;
  • How to join lengths of mouldings together as stretcher bars and frames;
  • How to use specialist equipment for stretching canvases and attaching them to stretcher frames;
  • A step-by-step approach to stretching canvas art;
  • Planning, marking, and attaching your stretched canvases into tray frames;
  • Using specialised accessories for attaching canvases into float and tray frames;
  • How to finish, add hanging fixings, and prepare your artwork ready to hang;

Please note:
You will be stretching and framing your own canvas artworks during the course, so you will need to bring two canvas pieces no larger than 400 x 500mm.

What will I make on the day?

All students will complete two framed canvas pieces:

Project 1

Stretch your own canvas artwork and fit it into a float frame

Project 2

Stretch a second canvas and attach it into a traditional frame

*Both completed projects will be finished to ready-to-hang standard.

What previous experience should I have?

No previous framing experience is required.

This course has been designed for complete beginners, as well as those who may have experimented with framing before. Confidence with hand tools can be helpful, but it is not necessary.
