Object Framing Course

Learn How To:

Use spacers to create depth in a frame
Build a frame that will support framing an object
Create reversible attachment techniques for three-dimensional items

What you’ll achieve

You will learn how to plan, support, display and frame three-dimensional objects safely and attractively using professional object-mounting techniques. You will gain confidence in creating depth, building internal structures, and completing a fully assembled object frame ready to hang.

Description

What will the course cover?

This one-day practical workshop explores how objects, collectables, memorabilia, and keepsakes can be displayed within a frame. You will learn how to create depth, support the item, and mount it using reversible principles that avoid damage.

Through demonstrations and hands-on practice, you will learn:

  • The concept and purpose of object framing
  • How objects and collectables can be displayed
  • How to create depth in a frame using spacers and internal structures
  • How to design and plan the layout around the object
  • How to calculate frame dimensions
  • How to cut mitred lengths of moulding for a deep rebate frame
  • How to join mouldings and construct the frame
  • How to line the interior using a mount spacer technique (Visual only – not done on the day.)
  • How to attach objects using reversible methods
  • How to cut the mount, glass, and backing
  • How to assemble and finish the framed object ready to hang

What will I make on the day?

All students will mount, support, and frame a three-dimensional object using a reversible attachment method, create depth using spacers, and complete the finished piece to a ready-to-hang standard by the end of the day.

On the day of the course, to keep everything running quickly and smoothly, the materials will be pre-selected. We use black frames and white mounts for the session, which helps streamline the process and ensures the course flows without too many options to choose from.

What previous experience should I have?

No previous framing experience is required.

This course has been designed for complete beginners, as well as those who may have experimented with framing before. Confidence with hand tools can be helpful, but it is not necessary.

How our courses are run:

  • Maximum 6 students per course
  • Running from 10am to 5pm, including lunch and refreshment breaks
  • All tools and framing materials are provided
  • The learning environment is collaborative, practical, and supportive

No tests or assessments — just enjoyable hands-on learning

What to bring

✅ Packed lunch

The venue is outside the town centre and access to food vendors is limited.

✅ Suitable clothing

  • No open-toe shoes or sandals
  • Avoid loose sleeves or flowing garments
  • Do not wear valuable clothing (adhesives, tools, dust)
  • Comfortable footwear recommended
  • Bring warm layers in colder months

✅ No object required

To ensure all students work with a suitable item and can learn the same techniques, we will supply a small object for you to frame on the day. This allows everyone to follow the same process and achieve consistent results without needing to source an item in advance.
