Description

What will the course cover?

This practical one–day workshop introduces you to the core principles of framing textiles and fabric-based artwork. You will learn how different fabrics, stitching styles, and artwork characteristics influence the methods used to support, mount, and frame them.

Through demonstrations and hands-on practice, you will learn:

  • How to assess artwork condition and characteristics before framing;
  • The specific requirements involved in framing fabrics based on age, weave, and construction;
  • Preparing artwork for mounting using conservation-friendly methods;
  • Creating a sink mount to support fabric pieces;
  • How to cut mitred lengths of moulding for the frame;
  • How to join lengths of moulding to create the frame;
  • How to cut the mount, glass, and backing;
  • An introduction to three core mounting methods:;
    • Lacing;
    • Pinning to a support board;
    • Newberry Fit;
  • How to secure and tension fabric artwork without distortion;
  • Assembling the frame and finishing it ready for hanging;

What will I make on the day?

All students will choose one of the three fabric support methods — lacing, pinning, or Newberry Fit — and then mount, frame, and complete their textile artwork to a ready-to-hang standard by the end of the day.

On the day of the course, to keep everything running quickly and smoothly, the materials will be pre-selected. We use black frames and white mounts for the session, which helps streamline the process and ensures the course flows without too many options to choose from.

What previous experience should I have?

No previous framing experience is required.

This course has been designed for complete beginners, as well as those who may have experimented with framing before. Confidence with hand tools can be helpful, but it is not necessary.
