Overview

On this course you will produce a gallery wrap and tray frame for tapestry or artwork on unstretched canvas. Both projects involve using specialised equipment to support and attach work to stretcher frames that you have cut and built.

You might be an artist with specific framing requirements or wanting to offer a comprehensive framing service. The processes involved are to the Fine Art Trade Guild Commended Level so ideal for anyone wanting to frame professionally – a suitable introduction if you wish to study for the Guild Certified Framer exam.

What Experience Do I Need?

You will maximise the training potential if you are already familiar with specialist tools used in basic framing and able to cut mitres in mouldings. Our Basics of Framing workshop will bring you up to speed.

Course Contents

This is a one day course from 10am – 5pm.

Class sizes are a maximum of 10 and we will supply each student with tools and materials to work with at their own work station.

Your day will include studying the sequences for a successful stretched canvas before planning your projects. You will consider the appearance of the edges of your stretched canvas – will the image wrap or be plain? Making stretcher bars involves cutting techniques and joining the lengths. To stretch and attach your artwork around your frame you will use the specialised equipment.

Now your artwork is stretched you can look to display and hang it by building a tray frame and using the specialist accessories.

What Do I Need to Bring?

We provide tea and coffee, a certificate of achievement and a full training manual. Don’t forget a packed lunch!

You will need to bring two pieces of artwork (on canvas) for stretching approximately 400 mm x 500 mm.

Your artwork can be photography on canvas, oil / acrylics on canvas, tapestry or printed fabrics. They will not be behind glass so must be suitable for remaining open to the air.
