Course details

This workshop is ideal for individuals interested in exploring the stretching and framing of canvas based artwork. It offers valuable insights into the terminology, styles, and key aspects of this area of framing whether you are an artist, framer or simply interested in craftsmanship.

Through a combination of clear explanations, demonstrations, and hands-on practice, you will gain training in the following areas:

  1. Artwork project planning, taking into account the artwork’s characteristics.
  2. Familiarity with terminology related to various canvas stretching styles.
  3. Techniques for joining pre-mitred lengths of moulding to create stretcher bars and frames.
  4. The use of specialised equipment for stretching canvases and attaching them to stretcher frames.
  5. A step-by-step approach to stretching canvas art.
  6. Planning, marking and attaching stretched canvases into tray frames.
  7. Utilisation of specialised accessories for attaching stretched canvases into both float/tray frames and traditional frames.
  8. Principles for the final finishing and hanging of canvas artworks.

What previous experience should I have?

This workshop is designed to cater to individuals who are brand new to framing, as well as those who may have dabbled in framing their work to some extent. While having prior experience with hand tools is not a requirement, if you do have such experience, it can certainly be helpful!

The primary focus of this course is to explore various stretching and framing techniques for canvases. To streamline this aspect, all stretcher bars and frames will come pre-cut from our manufacturing team, allowing you to join and assemble them yourself during the workshop.

If you believe you would benefit from learning how to cut moulding for frames, we recommend considering our Basics of Framing course. It serves as an excellent introductory course to teach you the process and proper techniques for frame cutting.”

How our courses are run

Courses are run with a maximum of 10 students. Starting at 10am and finishing at 5pm, there will be a 30 minute lunch break and a few short refreshment breaks.

Equipment for the day is provided, well maintained and shared amongst the students, you are encouraged to support and share any tips you have with each other.

Our courses are intended to be enjoyable, educational and collaborative learning experiences, there’s no stress from tests or assessments at the end of the day. We hope you leave with the satisfaction of building and learning something new.
